Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a Chinese healing art that has been used successfully for over 5,000 years. It works on the Chi system through the insertion of threadlike, sterilized, disposable needles in specific points on the body. These points are grouped along energetic channels that cross the body. Upon insertion the patient may feel a heavy or sore sensation if there is an energy blockage, but it is most often painless . If the correct stimulus of the needle has been obtained, the patient should feel some heaviness, distention, tingling, or electric sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected energy pathway or meridian.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
It has been determined that people are bioenergetic systems. When the balance of this energy is disturbed, either by a deficiency, excess, stagnation or trauma, pain or illness results. Acupuncture corrects the energy imbalance by encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal itself, without the use of drugs or surgery. Acupuncture also stimulates nerves through to the brain to release endorphins from the pituitary gland. Natural endorphins are 5 to 10 times more powerful than morphine, but not addictive.
Techniques
Treatment with acupuncture needles is the most common method used. Other techniques used are heat therapy, mild electrical stimulation, medicated herbal ear seeds, herbal medication, moxibustion and magnets.
Is It For You??
Acupuncture treatments are not only useful for pain management but also a part of preventive health care. Athletes use acupuncture to achieve optimum performance levels. Detoxification treatments have been proven to help those with chemical dependency problems. Please see the back of this brochure for other common conditions treated by acupuncture.
What To Expect!
When you have a treatment, you will be given a questionnaire to fill out on your health history and a permission form for me to give you an acupuncture treatment. You are then interviewed by the Acupuncture Physician. You will be asked about digestive problems, preference for hot or cold fluids, eating and sleeping habits, urine color, menstrual cycle and stress. During the interview the physician will note your skin condition, body language, tone of voice, and examine your tongue and take the pulse on both your wrists. Blood Pressure, pulse and temperature (western style) may also be taken. The TCM physician then administers a treatment .Each time you have a treatment there will be 10 questions we ask, check pulses and tongue for diagnosis.
What To Expect After Treatment
You may experience an immediate total or partial relief of your pain or other symptoms. This relief may last or sometimes the pain or symptoms may return. In a few cases, the pain may seem even worse. This is called rebound effect. By the next day or couple of days, the pain/symptoms can be expected to gradually improve. Usually, the most dramatic results are experienced in the first treatment. However, you should see some incremental improvement after each subsequent visit. In some cases, there may be no immediate relief only to experience the pain decrease over the next couple of days. You may see a small amount of blood after the needle is removed. This is expected in some cases.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments depends on the duration, severity and nature of each individual’s complaint. The A.P. will discuss with you how many treatments and how often you should come.
